Welcome!

“Writing is not a happy profession.  It is viciously individual.  I, the author, insist that I stand in for us, women.  In so doing, I insist on the ultimate social meaning of writing; in facing the nightmare, I want another generation of women to be able to reclaim the dreams of freedom that pornography has taken from me.”

Andrea Dworkin - on the writing of Pornography: Men Possessing Women, 1981

Welcome to the Carnival Against Pornography and Prostitution homepage; a blog carnival against sexual exploitation in all its forms.

Unfortunately as of June 2008, the Carnival is no longer running, but all six editions of the Carnival are on this site (links on the right) for you to read.

Thank you to everyone who contributed work to the Carnivals and all those who supported it.

Like porn, prostitution bolsters men whilst destroying women. Prostitution is rape; it is the rape of women who are being paid to provide an apparently essential service, if these johns are to be believed. These same johns would have us believe that the existence of prostitution reduces the incidence of rape. However, this study shows that the greater the frequency with which men use prostituted women, the more likely they are to be sexually aggressive with other women. So, to put it bluntly, prostitution is paid rape of women, which causes unpaid rape of women. Rape is a criminal offence, therefore we should be prosecuting the men who pay women for sex. That is the only way to dispell the myth that prostitution is in any way normal, or necessary to human nature. That is the only way that use of prostituted women can become something a man should be ashamed of, rather that some kind of rite of passage or achievement. That is the only way to show respect for, and belief in, the women who are prostituted; to acknowledge their abuse, and to prevent it, and to provide effective exit strategies so that they can survive without having to accept money from rapists. - Debs
